European exporters to benefit from collapse of US import tax proposal

On Thursday, congressional Republicans in the United States dropped a proposal for a 20% tax on imported goods as part of a broader tax reform plan. The Border Adjustment Tax (BAT) would have put European olive oil producers at a competitive disadvantage in relation to their American counterparts.

Whole Foods’ promise to lower prices has yielded disappointing results. Business Insider compared prices on 29 items at a Whole Foods store in Richmond, Virginia, to prices on those same items in November 2015. Most interesting is the info on EVOO – instead of a lower price, a 49% increase!

China is purchasing record amounts of olive oil and helping to stimulate global production, said a leading olive industry organization on Thursday.
