Vale Peter O’Clery
By Lisa Rowntree
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Peter O’Clery, a long-standing contributor to the Australian olive industry and a valued member of our olive growing community.
Peter’s commitment to excellence and integrity in our sector was evident throughout his years of service. He was the NSW Director on the Board of the Australian Olive Association (AOA) from March 2009 to May 2016 and served as President of Olives NSW. During this time, he played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of the industry, providing thoughtful guidance and strong leadership.
In 2010, Peter became instrumental in the development and rollout of the AOA Code of Practice for Australian Extra Virgin Olive Oil. As a member of the Industry Compliance Committee from its inception in 2011, he worked tirelessly to raise standards and awareness across the industry. His efforts helped ensure that around 80% of Australia’s commercial olive oil production met the Code’s stringent quality benchmarks, a legacy that has benefited producers and consumers.
Peter’s service extended beyond the olive industry. In 2009, he was awarded the Order of Australia for his outstanding contribution to the Australian travel and tourism sector and to the community, recognition of his passion for building industries that people could be proud of.
Peter was also a regular and active contributor to industry conferences, where his insights and willingness to share knowledge inspired many. He was not just a board member; he was a steady hand, a clear thinker, and a true advocate for progress and quality in all he undertook.
We extend our deepest condolences to Peter’s wife Caroline, his children and grandchildren. His dedication, wisdom, and friendship will be greatly missed, but his influence will continue to shape our industry for many years to come.
