First Southern Hemisphere Olive Oil Championship

Enrolment is now open for the 1st Southern Hemisphere Olive Oil Championship, the ANZSA Awards 2012. Held in Australia in conjunction with the 7th ARMONIA International Olive Oil Competition, the ANZSA competition is open to all olive growers, olive oil producers, processors and bottlers in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Winners will be entered into the international final of the ARMONIA-ALMA Trophy and the selection process for the “World’s 100 Most Outstanding Extra Virgin Olive Oils”. Closing date for applications and oil samples is 7 September, 2012. BFA 2012 Roadshows

Olive producer among finalists in Organic Pioneers Award

A Canowindra producer of organic winegrapes, olives and figs has been selected among the three finalists in the inaugural 2012 New South Wales Organic Pioneers Award. Sam Statham’s family business Rosnay is a certified organic farm producing winegrapes (20ha vineyard), olives (10ha) and figs (1ha). Value-added products include wine, olives in brine, olive paste, figs in syrup, fig preserve, and fig syrup.

‘Oli-Pha’ project develops greener packaging from olive mill waste

The launch of a new research project investigating the production of bio-plastics from olive mill waste waters promises an environmentally friendly use for the 30 billion litres of waste water generated around the world each year. The Oli-Pha project is the result of a amalgamation of industries, research facilities and universities from major olive oil producing regions in Europe and Latin America. The olive processing, plastics, packaging, food engineering , and environmental sectors have joined to realize the venture, which was launched in the Parc Mediterrani de la Tecnologia de Castelldefels in Barcelona in mid June this year.

Olive oil labelling in spotlight

Australian olive growers will take their campaign for a fair market for olive oil to a meeting today in Adelaide. It will be a state and federal ministerial council meeting. Federal Opposition spokesman on Consumer Affairs Bruce Billson has called for the issue of misleading labelling of imported brands to be put on the agenda for the meeting, which is being chaired by state Minister for Consumers John Rau. Mr Rau said he was happy for the issue to be discussed under the general heading of food labelling, “an area of consumer law which requires constant vigilance”.
