Health Star Ratings misleading consumers in edible oil market

The Federal Government’s Health Star Rating system is not telling consumers the whole story when it comes to the complex nutritional value of extra virgin olive oil, industry leaders claim.

EVOO is one of the most extensively-researched whole foods in nutrition science.

Rich in health-delivering polyphenols, it is a scientifically-proven superfood and cornerstone of the famously healthy Mediterranean diet.

It is widely viewed as both sustenance and medicine, helping to boost health and stave off disease.

But under a government proposal to make Health Star Ratings mandatory on the front of all packaged food sold in Australia, it could soon be presented as a “less healthy” option than other heavily-refined seed oils on the market.

As reported in last week’s edition of Friday Olive Extracts, the Australian olive industry is calling for edible oils to be exempt from any future mandate until a more equitable, science-based alternative can be developed.

Public feedback is now open, with consultation expected to play a key role in what comes next.

Australian Olive Association Chief Executive Officer Michael Southan said providing a lower rating for EVOO than for other highly refined seed oils was misleading to consumers.

It also had the potential to create mistrust in the rating system overall.

“We need to be very careful that by implementing this system, we don’t mislead consumers into using a product that’s not as good for them as another,” Mr Southan said.

“EVOO is a natural, single-ingredient food and one of the most researched in nutrition science, providing a range of proven health benefits.

“Unfortunately, the simplicity of the Health Star Ratings metric means these nutritional benefits are just not recognised.”

He urged authorities to review the products to be included in any mandated Health Star Rating system and provide an exemption for olives and olive oil until a more equitable system could be developed.

“You ask your medical practitioner or nutritionist – they would agree that EVOO is much better for your health than a lot of the other edible oils on the market,” Mr Southan said.

“Consumers deserve a rating system that tells the full story.”
