Virgin olive and veggie oils not always as advertised

Back in the spring, I noticed that a whiff of the cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil in the cupboard brought to mind a recent engine oil change rather than my idea of what the sun-drenched olive groves of Italy should smell like. When it comes to cooking oils, the old adage “buyer beware” has never been more true. Canadian inspectors do spot checks of olive oil here and some olive oil importers and distributors have been convicted under Canada’s Food and Drug Act for selling adulterated oils, but critics say inspectors could do a better job of enforcing labelling regulations.
