Australian olive growers are being urged to check their grove on the olive industry’s tree crop map, to help keep the important resource up-to-date.

The Australian Tree Crop Map provides the exact location and area of commercial olive groves across the country, providing a better understanding of the industry, its size and location.

The web-based mapping tool and dataset was developed by the University of New England as part of the broader Multi-Scale Monitoring Tools for managing Australian Tree Crops project, which provided national mapping for the horticultural sector.

The interactive olive tree map is available via the Australian Olive Association (AOA) website and provides crucial information for industry planning and disaster management.

It also provides a quick and easy way to identify affected groves in the event of a biosecurity outbreak, so accuracy is very important.

An interactive map for the Australian olive industry

Australia is home to approximately 10 million olive trees across 33,000 hectares.

These trees are located in 450 commercial groves, with production concentrated in north-central Victoria and north of Perth, in Western Australia.

The location and extent of known commercial olive groves larger than one hectare is represented on the map.
