New Zealand producers planning to infuse their Certified EVOO might like to consider an alternative this year. Olives NZ executive officer Gayle Sheridan said there is a shortage of Certified EVOO from the 2012 harvest, and a demand from people wishing to buy all types. Difficult weather conditions mean there has also been oil certified as Virgin rather than EVOO. This oil is still generally fine for infusing and remember, if you infuse EVOO it can no longer be labelled as EVOO. So if you are infusing oil, why not look to buy in Virgin oil and sell your EVOO to someone looking for this? Check out the Olives NZ website for EVOO wanted to buy https://www.olivesnz.org.nz/for-sale/

Please contact [email protected] and/or [email protected] ASAP with your suggestions.

The organisation has written to food magazines and writers, along with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Consumer NZ and FGC in response to the article above. Several magazines now plan to cover the issue of mislabelled olive oil. Now ONZ are calling for the industry to get behind the charge: “Producers can help, particularly by emailing or writing to local supermarkets, magazines, newspapers, etc,” ONZ EO Gayle Sheridan says. To make it easy, they’ve provided a sample letter you can modify and send. It’s on the website https://www.olivesnz.org.nz/members-news/communications/supermarket-draft-letter/
