Thanatos Painter’s death offering

Attributed to the Thanatos Painter, Attic white-ground lekythos, c430BC.
In Athens, in the second half of the 5th century BC, a standard offering to the dead was a vessel of olive oil left by the graveside. But these vessels were not all they seemed because they comprised a form of sly trickery.
An intriguing bit of history with very modern parallels … valuable olive oil and trickery!
