Ripe olives boost California economy almost $500 million yearly

California’s ripe olive growers have a significant impact on the state’s economy, yielding nearly $493.6 million in annual economic activity – or nearly $1.4 million each day of the year – as a result of grower spending, according to a newly released report commissioned by the California Olive Committee (COC) and conducted by Tootelian & Associates.

FDA: Proposed rule on changes to Nutrition Facts panel due by end of 2012

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aiming to publish a proposed rule to reform the Nutrition Facts panel and related rules by the end of this year, somewhat later than originally expected.
This ruling, which had been expected in 2011, will no doubt affect labels on imported products, so it’s an important planning consideration for anyone involved in exporting to the US – Ed.

Barjol says recent fraud cases show countries are ‘cracking down’

Olive oil has been getting a lot of bad press lately. Thanks to the release of Tom Mueller’s book, Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, recent allegations of fraud in Italy and Spain, and of substandard oil in Australia, its quality has been called into question globally. Olive Oil Times recently asked the International Olive Council what it is doing to prevent fraud and protect olive oil’s image.

NAFDAC uncovers fake anointing oil

The Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an alleged maker of fake Goya Olive oil. The discovery of the shop in Oja-tutu in the the Kwara State capital followed a two-day enforcement by the agency. The agency said its regulatory officers met the suspects illegally removing and relabelling different brands as well as unbranded vegetable oil products with fake Goya Olive oil labels.

Olives WA sensory training workshops

And a reminder about the Olives WA’s EVOO sensory training workshops on 24-25 March. Run by Richard Gawel, the workshops will cover the fundamentals of EVOO, and the effects of olive growing and processing methods on character and style. The courses will be presented in layman’s terms, and help participants to understand the key practical chemical indices of extra virgin olive oil. Super high density (SDH) olive specialists Olint held their 1st Annual Olive Oil Conference in Dixon, California on January 19-20. Presenting a wealth of practical and relevant information to olive and olive oil industry members, the conference also encompassed a trade show featuring the latest in related products and services. Conference speakers included AOA president Paul Miller, who presented on International Market Data and the Australian Standards Process, and Agromillora’s Xavier Rius, who gave three papers – Evolution of the SHD olive, Soil type and suitability of SHD and Irrigation scheduling.
