Ag shows a prime showcase for Australian produce

Australian country shows have long been a feature on regional calendars everywhere, an annual celebration of rural agriculture, industry and way of life.

Nowadays, these traditional country events continue to provide an important connection between the city and the country.

Hundreds of agricultural shows are held across the country each year, run by dedicated rural communities and volunteers.

They serve as an important celebration and exhibit of farming communities and the essential food and fibre products they provide.

Agricultural Shows Australia represents the more than 580 country shows held across the country each year, with a firm focus on promoting the essential value of the nation’s $100b agriculture sector.

Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries data shows these events contribute more than $1 billion to the economy, attract more than 6 million patrons and are supported by more than 50,000 volunteers.

In a time when so many Australians are removed from the frontline of primary production, country shows continued to connect farmers directly with consumers, providing a valuable hands-on experience.

Australian Olive association Chief Executive Officer Michael Southan said Australian agricultural shows provided a valuable opportunity to sell the “farm to table” concept.

“Annual spring shows continue to be a much-loved event in regional communities everywhere, as farmers and producers come together to showcase their world-class products,” he said.

“As we touched on again in last week’s edition, agritourism is a growth market for Australian olives and the wider ag sector.

“In a very similar grassroots way, agricultural shows allow producers to come face-to-face with consumers in an authentic, country setting and sell the story of their passion and brand.

“As the appetite for Australian olive products grows, it’s important we continue to educate consumers about where their favourite product comes from, every chance we get.”
