Celebrating Australian olives this National Ag Day

AOA Field Day-48

By Laura Thomas

Australia produces some of the best quality food in the world, but many consumers know little about how it actually arrived on the table.

National Agriculture Day is being celebrated next Friday 21 November 2025, putting a focus on the sector – and most importantly the people – who feed and clothe the country.

This year’s theme – “Stand with the Land” – recognises the resilience of Australian farmers as they work through climatic challenges and economic pressures while continuing to produce the highest quality food and fibre.

And Australian olive producers are no exception. They overcame drought, frost and flood to produce a supreme offering of oils and table olives in 2025.

For the olive industry, National Agriculture Day provides the perfect platform to continue consumer education about Australian oils and olive products, and the importance of buying certified, high quality and Australian-grown.

“We continually talk about the importance of our industry standard OliveCare® and for good reason – Australian olive oils and olive products are some of the best in the world,” Australian Olive Association Chief Executive Officer Michael Southan said.

“Consumers can be assured that if they buy Australian grown, OliveCare® certified olives and oil, they’re getting a top-tier product.

“This is such an important message for olive producers to be delivering to their customers, not just on National Agriculture Day, but year-round.”

Mr Southan said into the future, the flourishing agritourism market provided opportunity for producers to continue this grassroots consumer education.

“Consumers are increasingly interested in finding out more about where their food is grown and produced,” he said.

“They want to visit the farm for an authentic, first-hand experience.

“The concept of `agritourism’ presents such a great opportunity for boutique olive producers to educate the market, promote Australian-grown and sell their quality olive products, all in one go.”
